LPTP is a non-government organization (NGO), established in Jakarta in 1978 by idealistic and enthusiastic young people who wanted to participate in the development of rural areas where approximately 80% of Indonesians live. LPTP is based on the Pancasila and the National Constitution, and was legally constituted by notary license in 1980.

The mission of LPTP is to actively develop the social sciences and appropriate technology. In accordance with this mission, it is concerned with the major problems faced by Indonesian people, such as poverty, ignorance and the degradation of the environment. The organization attempts to optimize national development so that the majority of people can prosper. LPTP tries to develop, in an innovative way, the scientific knowledge and technical skills people need to live self-sufficiently and independently. It always seeks to encourage a democratic atmosphere, national solidarity and a spirit of cooperation in an effort to improve the quality of life as well as to achieve social transformations. Programs carried out in cooperation with the government, universities, the private sector and other NGOs are in accordance with the National Constitution and the laws, norms and values of society.

A majority of Indonesia 's human resources are young people. They have great dedication, skills and high motivation. LPTP tries to utilize this resource, both for the benefit of the organization and for the continued development of the young people themselves. As part of the development of human potential, LPTP facilitates and guides the transfer of useful science and appropriate technology. LPTP programs are formulated from aspirations and demands existing in the community. A process of action and reflection is used to form all programs. They include:

Developing non-conventional energy based on adopting and improving appropriate technology, the sustainable use of natural resources in agriculture, cattle breeding, housing, sanitation and health.

Education and training in the areas of action research, the application of various theories of development, business management for small industry, mechanical technology and appropriate technology. Information services: e.g. library, publishing, and audiovisual materials.

For each project, , law, agriculture, engineering, economics, social science, literature, medicine, staff with appropriate skills is selected to create a multidisciplinary team. The educational background of staff includes education communication, geography, computer science, and cinematography.

Facilities include the main center at Palur, which is built over 3,600 square metres, with training rooms, workshops and machine tools. At the model farm in Boyolali, agriculture, cattle breeding and bio-manure unit trials are carried out. The Tekad co-operative is the focus for business activities, including a service to assist small businesses with marketing: the Jakarta office manages a project for small industries. Other facilities are a library service and an audiovisual studio.

LPTP has a proven record in effectively managing and implementing all stages of development projects, such as preparation of proposals, consultation with project beneficiaries, implementation of plans, documentation, and liaison and co-operation with government departments, the private sector and other NGOs. Projects are completed within agreed timeframes and budgets, and are subject to regular evaluation to ensure their effectiveness. LPTP experience includes:

Development of appropriate technology for small industry and handicrafts, renewable energy, water supply and treatment systems and agricultural technology, creation and implementation of alternative education programs and workshops.

Publication and dissemination of information about appropriate technology through the bulletins Action Research , Bimu and Warta Tekad Desaku ; a book on biogas; clipping service; and an audio-visual program.

Supply of clean water to villages by installing rainwater storage tanks gravitation and well systems .
Development of micro-hydro electrical energy
Radio broadcasts of information about rural development.
An integrated pest management program.
An integrated rural development project, including the establishment of bio-manure units.
Implementation of a small business service project, which seeks to promote small-scale industry and small businesses.
Construction of 350 houses as part of a low cost housing project.
Successful implementation of the Green Belt Management Plan around the Kedungombo dam and the development of farmers' income program.
Provision of information on appropriate technology, small-scale industry and agriculture to the Yogyakarta newspaper Kedaulatan Rakyat for inclusion in a regular column about rural development.
In addition, LPTP has worked on the development of a relevant social science of social transformation, as well as organizing research, workshops and seminars in cooperation with universities and other NGOs, both from Indonesia and overseas.
